In late 1968, the University of Michigan awarded O’Neal the Power Center for Performing Arts project. After completion, the Michigan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects designated this structure as one of 50 of the most significant structures in Michigan.
The Power Center contained several construction challenges such as 100-foot stage tower walls with no intermediate support, a massive proscenium beam supporting the stage front, curved walls made of architectural concrete, and two spiral stairs that remain record holders for the number of turns in a concrete spiral stairway.
