The State Theatre Wins Preservation Project of the Year Award; Russ Collins – Preservationist of the Year
The City of Ann Arbor’s Historic District Commission recognizes commitment to history and architecture with its annual historic preservation awards. Most winners are residences but the State Theatre rocked the house, and was awarded Project of the Year! The State is a stellar example of the Art Deco style from 1942. With an addition wedged into the alley, a new marquee and the creation of four separate theaters, the State had a total makeover. The O’Neal Construction Team, with Quinn Evans Architects, did an outstanding job with this challenging project, making the theater a destination at the end of Liberty Street.
It was the vision of Michigan Theater Foundation CEO and Executive Director, Russ Collins, that made this undertaking a reality. Russ was awarded Preservationist of the Year. He has been at the helm for 35 years and previously restored The Michigan, also by O’Neal Construction.
